The 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport has been spied for the first time. The new Pajero Sport is India bound, and will be Mitsubishi’s answer to the next generation models of the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavor. With the Cedia, Outlander and Montero discontinued, the current generation Pajero Sport represents Mitsubishi India’s fleet in its entirety.

Although hidden under sheaths of camouflage, the new Pajero Sport will sport lines that mimic the newly launched 2015 Triton double cab pick-up, the model on which it is based on. Compared to its predecessor, the new Pajero Sport’s styling will be all-new and more contemporary, with stylistic references to the Triton. Dimensionally, the SUV will somewhat mirror that of the pick-up too, which is 5280 mm long, 1815 mm wide and 1780mm tall, with a 3000mm wheelbase.

Even the mechanicals are to be carried over from Triton, which means that power will come from a new low-compression, all-aluminium, direct-injected 2.4-litre MIVEC diesel engine with a variable geometry turbo, matched as standard to a new six-speed manual gearbox, but also available with a five-speed automatic. The engine produces 180 hp at 3500rpm and 430Nm of torque at 2500rpm.

A plug-in hybrid version of the new Pajero Sport is also expected and said to have its eco-friendly powertrain carried over from the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Both four-wheel-drive versions and high-riding two-wheel-drive models will be offered.
