A constable attached to the District Armed Reserve Police reportedly committed suicide in the guardroom of the District Treasury Office at Devagiri near Haveri on Friday.
The incident took place at the Mini Vidhana Soudha that houses the offices of various government departments and also the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Haveri.
The constable was identified as Somashekhar Gollar (38), a native of Kunimellihalli located off the National Highway No. 4 near Haveri. Superintendent of Police N. Shashikumar and Additional Superintendent of Police Srinath Joshi visited the spot.
Mr. Srinath Joshi told The Hindu that the constable locked himself up in the room and reportedly shot himself in the head with his .303 rifle.
The police did not find any note, he said and added that investigation was under way to establish the reasons for the constable taking his life. The constable is survived by his wife and a son.
He said that the body was sent to Davangere for post-mortem.
According to preliminary investigation, the incident took place between 7.45 a.m. and 8.45 a.m. Somashekhar was to have been relieved from duty at 9 a.m.
