Conman dupes Goans of crores of rupees

Failing to track accused from Pune, police suspect he has shifted base to Delhi.
Conman dupes Goans of crores of rupees
MARGAO: Jayant Nalawade, a conman from Pune has allegedly duped many persons from South Goa of several crores of rupees so far. Posing as an insurance agent and real estate broker, he allegedly conned them into parting with their hard-earned money to invest in non-existent properties or fake money-multiplier schemes. Between March 2013 and March 2015, six police complaints have been booked against him, all at the Margao police station.
Nalawade has managed to hoodwink the police and evade the long arm of the law, despite a lookout notice having been issued against him by the South Goa police.
Police sources said that Nalawade was arrested once by the Margao town police in one of the cases; but following his release on bail, the cops have failed to apprehend him in other cases. The failure of the police in nabbing the accused for so long has raised eyebrows, particularly in view of speculations that several police personnel who had invested in Nalawade’s dubious insurance schemes have managed to recover their money from him. Is the police inaction a quid pro quo for getting their money back from the accused? While the police have stoutly denied such an occurrence, their denials will be taken with a pinch of salt until Nalawade is brought to book.
The first case against Nalawade was booked at the Margao town police station on March 30, 2013. Josefina Fernandes, a resident of Per-Seraulim, had complained to the police against Nalawade and his accomplice, Vinod Dhamakle, following which the police had registered a case of cheating against the duo under Sections 418, 419 and 420 of the IPC.
While Dhamakle had introduced Nalawade to Fernandes, Nalawade had offered to sell a row house at Fatorda to Fernandes. In accordance with the terms of the deal, Fernandes paid Nalawade a sum of 95 lakhs between July and August 2012. However, as Nalawade failed to give possession of the row house to Fernandes by October 2012 as promised, she lodged a police complaint.
On December 13, 2013, another case of cheating was booked against Nalawade at the Margao police station. The complainant, J T Vaz accused Nalawade and his accomplice, Ashok Malkarnekar, of taking 15 lakhs from him as part payment towards the sale of a flat at Gogol, Margao. However, as Nalawade’s behavior appeared suspicious, Vaz contacted the builder of the building complex, who informed him that the flat in question had already been sold off.

Another complaint of cheating against Nalawade-Malkarnekar duo was booked by the Margao town police on March 31, 2013. Sebastiao Sequeira complained to the police that the accused conned one of his relatives, Clancia Menezes, into parting with 32 lakhs after promising to sell a row house to her.
A case also stands registered against the Nalawade-Dhamakle duo on charges of cheating Ludwik Barreto, a Goan but presently residing in Pune, of 45,000, after they gave him false promises of selling a row house.
Another case of cheating booked against Nalawade at the Margao town police station pertains to a complaint lodged by Premanand Chari, an LIC agent. Nalawade sweet talked Chari into parting with a sum of 97.5 lakhs to be deposited in a fake insurance scheme that would double his money in 12 months. As Chari failed to realize even his principal amount from the scheme, he lodged a complaint with the police.
Just last week, another such case was booked against Nalawade at the Margao town police station. Devanand Patgandi, a resident of Davorlim, in his complaint accused Nalawade and his accomplice, Reshma Naik, of cheating him of 32.5 lakhs after giving false assurance of selling a bungalow at Gogol to him. Though Patgandi had paid the amount to the accused in April 2013, he complained last week , as the accused neither gave him the possession of the bungalow nor refunded the amount paid to him even after two long years.
Police suspect that Nalawade may have shifted his base to Delhi, but have so far failed in tracking him down.
