Jamalpur brothers’ murder: Court awards RI for father in 2010 case, spares mother

Following the FIR, brothers and his parents were booked by Samrala police.

Almost six months after two brothers — Harinder and Jitender, both in their 20s — were gunned down at their paying guest accommodation at Jamalpur allegedly by Akali sarpanch Gurjit Singh and four policemen, including Machhiwara SHO Manjinder Singh (still absconding), on September 27 last year, a local court of Samrala has convicted their father Satpal Singh alias Satti and mother Gurmeet Kaur in a trespassing and violence case filed by their neighbours.

Taking a sympathetic and lenient view due to the death of their two sons, the court spared their mother Gurmeet Kaur of imprisonment as per the orders of sub-divisional judicial magistrate Sumit Bhalla.

Narinder Singh, their neighbour, lodged an FIR at Samrala police station on May 10, 2010, alleging that boys along with their parents and three accomplices trespassed into his home on the night of May 9 and attacked him with sharp-edged weapons. The clash was over a small issue of some trees planted by brothers in his field which he removed.

Following the FIR, brothers and his parents were booked by Samrala police.

Father Satpal Singh pleaded for a lenient view for himself and his wife in the court saying that “both sons died during pendency of the case” and “that both parents are old persons”.

However, the court in its judgment said, “Their two sons died during pendency of the case but that does not mean that gravity of offence becomes lesser. Keeping in view the provision of Section 360 of CrPC and keeping in view that convict Gurmeet Kaur is old wife of co-convict Satpal Singh, she is ordered to be released on furnishing probationary bonds of Rs 50,000 with directions to be peaceful in society.”

The court refused to take a sympathetic view for father and said, “He does not deserve any kind of leniency due to gravity of offences and the manner in which it was committed.”

The court announced rigorous imprisonment of two years under Section 452 of the IPC and rigorous imprisonment of another six months under sections 323 and 34 of the IPC for the father.

In a high-profile case which saw Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal forming a special investigation team led by Ludhiana Commissioner Pramod Ban, two brothers from Bhoapur village were gunned down following their old rivalry with Gurjit Singh, sarpanch of neighbouring Takhran Khokran village. SHO Manjinder Singh who raided their PG room along with Gurjit Singh is still absconding and police have failed to arrest him.

Akali sarpanch Gurjit Singh, constable Yadwinder Singh and two home guard jawans Ajit Singh and Baldev Singh are behind bars in a fake encounter case while the SHO and his gunman are absconding.

However, the brothers were infamous in their area and were known as goons who picked fights, thrashed others on petty issues and brandished weapons and also ran a group called ‘Gunda Staff’.
