Malaysia Open: Indonesia's Doubles Team Pass to Quarterfinal

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka, Indonesia’s sole representative at the Malaysia Open in men’s single badminton, gave in to Hong Kong player Wei Nan in a three-set match with scores 19-21, 21-18 and 13-21. With this defeat, Indonesia is left with no more single player in the quarter-final. Previously, three single women players lost in preliminary matches.

Indonesia still has hope in other matches in the quarter-final after four doubles players scored victories. In men’s doubles, Mohammad Ahsan and Hendr Setiawan beath thier juniors, Andrei Adistia and Hendri Aprida Gunawan, with scores 21-11 and 21-17. In the quarter final this Friday, Ahsan and Hendra will face Japanese duo, Hiroyuki Endo and Kenichi Hayakawa, who defeated Markis Kido and Agripinna Prima Rahmanto Putra.

Besides Ahsan and Hendra, Indonesia’s other male doubles that made it to the big eight are Angga Pratama and Ricky Karanda Suwardi who beat Kim Gi Jung and Kim Sa Rang from South korea in a three-set match with scors 14-21, 21-12 and 21-12. In the next match, Angga and Ricky will face Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen from Denmark.

Manwhile, in women’s doubles, Nitya Krishinda Maheswari and Greysia Polii are the only Indonesian pair who passed to the quarter-final after beating out Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa from India. They will face Luo Ying and Luo Yo from China in the next match.

In mixed doubles, Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir, who defeated Keigo Sonoda and Naoko Fukuman from Japan, will face Chris Adcock and Gebrielle Adcock from the UK. This British pair previously beath Indonesia’s othe rmixed doubles, Edi Subaktiar and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja.
