Gujarat leaders and their chartered flights of fancy

On Thursday, all roads in Bengaluru – rather, all runways – led to BJP’s national executive meet. It was a red carpet laid out at HAL airport and Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), both 35 km from each other. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home minister Rajnath Singh arrived at HAL, while all other dignitaries from across the country – barring one state – touched down in commercial flights at the KIA for the jamboree.

That one state was Gujarat.

Following in the path shown by none other Modi himself when he was the CM there, his successor, Anandiben Patel, flew down in a chartered flight. Her counterparts from Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Jharkhand arrived in aam janta flights.

Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje Scindia took IndiGo 6E-468 flight along with Railways minister Suresh Prabhu. Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Raman Singh flew Jet (9W-2608), Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar came in IndiGo 6E-507 and Jharkhand CM Raghubar Das by IndiGo (6E-347).

The Gujarat chief minister landed in a VT APL owned by Karnavati Aviation Pvt Ltd, which has its address in Adani House in Ahmedabad.

According to the travel itinerary of dignitaries accessed by Bangalore Mirror , among four chief ministers and an ex-chief minister, it is only the Gujarat CM who took the option of flying down in a private flight.

Not only Anandiben Patel, but a phalanx of RSS-BJP leaders from Gujarat chose chartered flights to the humble commercial flight. One group flew in on a nine-seater aircraft at 9.35 am on Thursday; it was also a VT APL owned by Karnavati Aviation Private Limited: These were Nitinbhai Patel, Gujarat Finance, Medical Education and Health minister, Parsottambhai Rupala, an RS member and a national office bearer, Bhikhubhai Dalsaniya, the state organising general secretary who was in the reckoning for CM’s post, and Vijay Rupani, cabinet minister handling transport, water and labour departments.

Six national executive committee members and ministers including Sushma Swaraj, Ravishankar Prasad, Anil Madhav Dave, Kalraj Mishra travelled together on an Air India flight.

BJP local leaders took turns at both HAL and KIA to welcome the leaders at the airport and ensure their travel, on city streets defaced with banners and buntings, to their designated hotels in the city — Hotel Lalit Ashok, Le Meridien and Gold Finch.
