Muslim teen in court ‘abduction’ drama turns against Hindu husband

Speaking to Newsline, the husband said, “I am absolutely clueless what is happening. My lawyers are guiding me. All I know is that we love each other. She is under pressure. My wife is pregnant and I am only praying that she stays healthy. I will fight the legal battle.”

Newsline first reported the incident on March 27 when the woman, a Muslim who converted to get married to the Hindu man, had come to the court to make sure her parents did not harm them. CMM Savitri, while expressing concern that the woman may become a victim of honour killing, had directed police to trace her and ensure the couple’s safety after the abduction took place inside the court premises.

The recording of the statement by the woman did not, however, take place smoothly. After her first appearance, the court sent her to a shelter home for a day. “I have had an occasion to interact with her for about 15 minutes. In my opinion, she is not in a position to depose voluntarily and independently today. Hence, she is ordered to be sent to a shelter home and be produced tomorrow,” the CMM Savitri noted on Tuesday.

However, a day later, the husband opposed the recording of the statement on the ground that the woman remained in the custody of her parents for a period of four days. “She requires counselling and is not in a proper frame of mind to get her statement recorded and is under pressure and the undue influence of her parents,” the mans’s counsel told the court.
