Residents of Chakkarpur village and family members of the five-year-old girl, who was raped on Sunday in a park behind DT Mega Mall, blocked MG road near Sikanderpur Metro station on Thursday and demanded that the administration shift the girl to Medanta in Gurgaon from Safdarjung Hospital. The family also demanded that the girl’s medical expenses should be borne by the government.

“My daughter has still not recovered and she needs medical assistance for another month. We cannot afford to leave work and stay with her in the hospital. Medicines are also very expensive. We want the administration to help shift our daughter to the Gurgaon hospital,” the girl’s father said.

The family had alleged that, after the incident, when the girl was rushed to a city civil hospital, “they denied admission saying they were not capable of treating her”. After the civil hospital referred the girl to Safdarjung hospital, her family rushed her to a private hospital in Gurgaon.

“We went to the private hospital and they too turned us away saying they do not have equipment to perform the surgery”, the father alleged.

However, Chief Medical Officer at the civil hospital, Pushpa Bishnoi rubbished reports that the girl “was denied admission”. “She was given proper first aid and only then referred to Safdarjung Hospital. Her condition was so severe that she needed immediate surgery. In Safdurjung, a paediatric surgeon operated her,” Bishnoi told Newsline.

The family also alleged that the One-Stop Crisis Centre (OSCC) at the civil hospital — that provides medical aid and support to victims of sexual assault— was not functional.

Meanwhile, while assuring that speedy action will be taken against the accused, the district administration said the family had no valid reason as to why they wanted to shift the girl from Safdarjung.

“They family has no valid reason for wanting to shift her. We have spoken to doctors in Safdarjung hospital and they said they are giving her the best treatment and she is recuperating. Also, the girl’s family is not ready to take responsibility if anything happens to the girl while shifting her. They refused to give it in writing. We have spoken to Medanta too and once the parents give it in writing, we will shift her immediately,” Gurgaon DCP T L Satya Prakash said.

The incident occurred on Sunday, when the girl had gone to attend a function at a relative’s house in Chakkarpur. The accused was arrested from the spot and was sent to three days police remand and later sent to 14 days judicial custody.
