GUNTUR: A rare life saving limb vascular surgery was performed by senior plastic and cosmetic surgeon, Dr.Sumitha Sankar at a private hospital in the city. According to experts, this is first time for such a critical surgery to be performed in coastal Andhra Pradesh. The 30-year old victim Anjali of Rompicherla in the district was critically injured a road accident last fortnight. She was rushed to an orthopedic super-specialty hospital in Guntur where doctors saved her almost from the death.
After seeing the patient completely recovered, Dr. Sumita Shankar explained the case to the media here on Thursday. She said that the patient was involved in polytrauma suffering injuries to both her legs and left upper limb. Her right leg below the knee bone was fractured and injuring the major vessel of the leg. After orthopedic surgeon providing the bone fixation, Dr.Sumita followed it by micro-vascular repair which took nearly 6 hours of procedure. The injured Popliteal Artery was repaired with Interposition Vein graft to restore circulation in the Limb. In such severe trauma (compound fractures), timing of repair is extremely essential, said Dr.Sumita. In acute trauma, the limb muscles cannot bear blockage of blood circulation for more than 8-10 hours. In case of delay dead muscles breakdown to myoglobin which could result in kidney damage and even cause death of the patient due to acute renal failure, she explained.
