BMW is currently testing its upcoming G30 5 Series model and our carparazzi caught them in Scandinavia comparing it to the current F10 5er. That means the Germans are serious about making their new model a lot better than before.
And they will also have the means to do it. The new 5 Series will be built atop the modular CLAR platform (Cluster Architecture) that will also be the basis for all rear-wheel drive cars from the 3 Series up. With that being the case, expect some new materials to be used.

The G30 will borrow tech from its bigger brother, the G11 7 Series that is getting ready to be launched in Frankfurt this fall. Both of them will use lighter materials like CFRP and aluminum everywhere possible for a couple of reasons.

First of all, by reducing the weight of their cars, BMW wants to take down fuel consumption and CO2 emissions even more. The target set by the EU of 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer per fleet is really hard to achieve.

On top of that, having fewer kilos to carry around will also help with the car’s handling, something BMW has been bragging with ever since it was founded. That’s especially an issue on the M5 version where every gram counts.

Speaking of which, rumor has it that the Germans will keep the 4.4-liter V8 twin-turbo mill alive for one more generation. Apparently, the new M5 will have the mill tuned to make 600 HP and around 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque in its standard guise. There will also be a Competition Package available that messes around with the number a little more.

At this point, BMW is basically playing catch-up with German tuner Alpina that already has two models putting out that amount of power, the B5 and B6 Biturbo.

In terms of interior design don’t expect huge changes. The overall look will be the same, but we will get the new iDrive system with touch-sensitive screens and possibly gesture recognition software. Augmented reality might not trickle down from the 7 Series initially, but we could see a next-level generation of autonomous driving aids.
