KUALA LUMPUR: Non-governmental organisation Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) has urged the government to invest the police with more powers to combat crime and illegal syndicates.
Speaking to reporters after submitting information on illegal gambling units to Selangor Police Chief Datuk Abdul Samah Mat at the Ampang Jaya district police headquarters, JMM president Azwanddin Hamzah said the government should reinstate the Banishment Act 1959.
He said although 2,293 illegal gambling units were shut down in the last six months, the main target or the heads of the syndicates are still free.
"The head of syndicates and the shop owners are not arrested in most cases, and this situation enables them to continue with their activities after some time," he added.
Azwanddin said JMM will initiate discussion with district and state police chiefs to crackdown on illegal gambling activities.
"Even today, we have submitted evidence related to names and places of illegal gambling units and we will continue our fight against this activity," he said.
