Kilkenny may not have won the game but Henry Shefflin says the drawn All-Ireland final against Galway in 2012 was the highlight of his career.

The Cats trailed for most of the game but Shefflin’s 12-point haul saw them claw their way into a lead before a late Galway free brought the game to a replay, which Kilkenny won.

The 36-year-old Ballyhale Shamrocks man, who confirmed his retirement earlier today, picked out that game as the one that will give him most pleasure when he looks back on his illustrious, medal-laden career.

“We were obviously struggling, I just came into a zone,” Shefflin told RTÉ Sport.

“I just got to a level where all I wanted to do was just play hurling as if there was no-one else on the field. It reminds you of having dreams of being in your local field, of what you’d love to do on an All-Ireland final day.

“It happened that day for myself. We didn’t win that match but it was probably my greatest ever performance in an All-Ireland final.

"For any sports person you want to perform at your highest [level] in the biggest occasion.

“For me the highlight was to play at the top of your game when the pressure is on the most on the biggest stage.”
