JALANDHAR: A pregnant teacher of a local government school who was hauled to the police station by cops on March 22 after the Education Providers' Union announced a black flag protest during PM Narendra Modi visit to the martyrs' memorial at Hussainiwala on March 23, suffered a miscarriage soon after that. The cops paid no heed to her pleas that she had been advised bed rest or bother about her prescription slip.
Rajni, 34, who teaches in Government Elementary School, Tej Mohan Nagar, is one of the around 7,000 education providers in government schools whose salaries have also been delayed and their demand of regularization ignored.
Punjab Police had taken several of the Union leaders into preventive custody.
Rajni's husband, Harjinder, submitted a complaint to senior police officers on Wednesday, seeking immediate and strict action against the erring cops. A departmental Inquiry has been ordered against him.
The issue has become a major embarrassment for the state government and police, and the Jalandhar Commissionerate of Police has placed SI Bhupinder Singh, who forced her to come to the police station under suspension
Giving an account of the happenings, a distraught Rajni said, "A sub-inspector and a woman constable came to our house in Avtar Nagar area at around 6.30 am on March 22 and asked me to come to the police station. We explained that I was eight weeks pregnant and had been advised bed rest and even showed him the prescription slip, but he remained adamant and said I could show the slip to SHO Bhargo Camp."
Her husband continued, "I took out my car and the woman constable sat in our car which further depressed and embarrassed her. After reaching the police station she was kept standing for a couple of hours. Later we showed the prescription slip again, gave a copy to the cops and she was allowed to go at around 10 am. But by that time she had begun complaining of abdominal pain."
"She took medicine after returning home but we could not consult the doctor as it was a Sunday, and she began bleeding. When the doctor carried out an ultrasound on Monday, we found that she had suffered an abortion," said Harjinder showing the medical reports.
