RANCHI: The body of a three-and-a-half-year-old child, Afaan Ansari, resident of Jannat Nagar area in Khunti was found in a well around two kilometers from his home on Wednesday, after he reportedly went missing on March 19.
An FIR was lodged with regard to the kidnapping at Khunti police station by his parents, Ismail Ansari and Afsana Parveen, against unidentified persons.
The case was being investigated by the anti-human trafficking unit (AHTU) of Khunti, headed by Aradhna Singh.
"The body was discovered by a few locals from the village after they got a foul smell near the well. They traced the smell to the well and found a floating sack inside with the child's body inside. They immediately informed us of the situation," said Singh.
However, the post-mortem report revealed that the boy was strangled to death. Police said that the child was probably murdered on the same day he was kidnapped.
Singh said that the murder looked to be planned as the rope tied to the sack was brand new. "The child's parents are charging their family members for the disappearance and murder of the child, as they have been involved in a family land dispute," said Singh.
Talking about the one-week extensive search operation, Singh said: "We searched the area thoroughly as the parents alleged the kidnapping to be planned." Police are still carrying on an investigation and no arrests have been made so far.
The initial FIR lodged in relation to the case was under section 368 of IPC which talks about wrongfully concealing or keeping in confinement, kidnapped or abducted person.
However, now that the body has been discovered, a case would be lodged under section 302 of IPC which deals with punishment for murder and section 201 which talks about causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender, said Singh.
