Public asked to Help in Naming Geological Components of Pluto and Charon

NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft will pass by Pluto and its largest moon, Charon on July 14, 2015. It will click high-resolution pictures of the both. The images will reveal about craters, rifts and valleys, which will definitely need interesting names.

Therefore, the International Astronomical Union and the SETI Institute has come up with ‘Our Pluto’ campaign. As a part of the campaign, the public has been requested to share their views on how to name features on the surfaces of Pluto and its largest moon Charon.

Images even provided by the Hubble Space Telescope of Pluto and Charon are not being able to clearly explain surface details of Pluto and Charon. But such would not be the case with the images provided by New Horizons, which will fly by the distant worlds in July.

Images provided by it will clearly show geological characteristics. But the researchers have plans to have a lot of names for features on Pluto and Charon in advance only.

Officials involved in the campaign suggested that one can vote for his favorite from a list of names or he can suggest a new name as well, which is not mentioned in the list. The official website also has a simple ballot that allows young children to participate in the campaign.

Names can be associated with a broad themes related to mythology or history of exploration. The campaign will run till April 7 and after that date, the New Horizons team will sort through the names and will submit their recommendations to the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

Final decision on how the names are used will be with the IAU. Mark Showalter, New Horizon science team member and a senior research scientist at the SETI Institute said that Pluto is of everyone. Therefore, they want everyone should be involved in the making of its map.
