Steps have been taken to repair the canal from Viswakudi reservoir and release water before June, said Darez Ahamed, District Collector, here on Wednesday.
Speaking at the farmers’ grievances day meeting, Mr.Ahamed said that Tamil Nadu government had released Rs. 3 crore to the district for improving drinking water facilities. Steps have been taken for supplying drinking water without any problem in the district during this summer.
Raja Chidambaram, farmer, appealed to the Collector to implement the Cauvery combined water scheme announced by the government for Perambalur district. He said the scheme envisaged providing drinking water from Lalgudi taluk via Sengaraiyur, Naranamangalam, and Veppanthattai to 306 villages.
Listing out the major crops in the district, the Collector said that paddy is cultivated on 8,940 hectares, sugarcane on 5,713 hectares, pulses on 1,950 hectares, cotton on 40,049 hectares, millets on 39,053 hectares, and oil seeds on 2,376 hectares.
