A delicious kosher Israeli red for Passover

Seth Yaffe knows wine. So when the chief operating officer for The Gallows Group — which includes the South End spots The Gallows and Blackbird Doughnuts — recommends a delicious red that happens to be kosher for Passover, his customers take notice. The bottle, hailing from Israel, is a 2013 Barkan Vineyards “Classic” Pinot Noir, made from fruit grown in the Negev Desert (the producer is the country’s second largest winery). Yaffe says the pour “has black cherry and strawberry, and also nice mint and Mediterranean herb flavors.” He likes it for its acidity and rounded tannins, both of which make it splendid with anything served at the Seder table, from beef brisket to bitter herbs. The wine pro hopes you will sip it at Passover, and then request a glass when it appears on The Gallows’ wine list later this spring. Barkan Vineyards “Classic” Pinot Noir 2013 (around $14), available at Marty’s Fine Wines, Newton, 617-332-1230, and Marty’s Big Buys, Allston, 617-782-3250.
