Albanian police arrested seven suspects on Wednesday for allegedly cultivating narcotic plants in Saranda, southern Albania, a police spokesman said.

During an anti-narcotics operation launched on Wednesday, police found an underground plantation used for the cultivation of cannabis.

According to police, nearly 10,000 cannabis plants were planted in the plantation, which is about 1,000 square meters in size.

Police said further investigation was underway in order to find whether there were other persons involved in the illegal activity.

According to a study on organized crime, published on Wednesday by the foundation Open Society for Albania, 42 percent of the crimes committed in Albania are related to drugs. Enditem
