NEW DELHI: Mercedes-Benz plans to reintroduce its Maybach limousine in India as part of a focus on niche models, sales of which have almost doubled over the past few years.

Maybach, Mercedes-Benz’s most expensive brand, was introduced in India in 2004 with an ex-showroom price of more than Rs 5 crore. The company pulled it off the Indian market a few years later because of low demand, reintroduced it in 2011 and then phased it out globally. “We are investigating the options to bring Maybach to the Indian market. India has a strong appetite for chauffer driven superluxury cars and our top-end Maybach perfectly fits into that bracket,” Mercedes-Benz India MD and CEO Eberhard Kern told ET. Till other bespoke models like Bentley, Ferrari and the Rolls Royce, which offered high level of personalisation, entered the Indian market, Maybach had sold only a few dozen units.

Earlier this month, Mercedes-Benz re-introduced Maybach at the Geneva Motor Show, not as a standalone nameplate like in the past, but as one of Mercedes’ subbrands based on the new S-Class platform.
