Oscar Taveras memorial patches stitched on Cardinals jerseys

The St. Louis Cardinals have stitched memorial patches honoring former outfielder Oscar Taveras, who died in a car crash last October.

In February, it was announced that the Cardinals would wear an "OT" patch on their 2015 regular season uniforms.

The fatal crash, which killed the 22-year-old Taveras and his girlfriend, occurred in the Dominican Republic. Officials later said that Taveras' blood alcohol level was five times the legal limit when he crashed the car. 

Taveras played one season in Major League Baseball, appearing in 80 games for the Cardinals. 

During the World Series, Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura honored Taveras with a message inscribed on his hat, which was sent to the Hall of Fame following the game. Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez also announced in December that he would wear No. 18 to honor Taveras. 

St. Louis opens its season on April 5 at the Chicago Cubs.
