Glove signed by Ty Cobb top item at Scottsdale auction

A glove autographed by baseball legends Ty Cobb, Mel Ott and Tris Speaker was the top bid getter at $3,900 during a recent auction at J. Levine Auction & Appraisal in Scottsdale.

  • A two-day sports memorabilia auction in Scottsdale grossed %2494%2C500 with the majority of those sales coming from the private collection of Scottsdale resident Sid Stern.

Fetched at $3,900, a baseball glove signed by Ty Cobb and other baseball legends was the top-selling item during a recent sports-memorabilia auction in Scottsdale.

The two-day sports memorabilia auction grossed $94,500 last week at J. Levine Auction & Appraisal. The majority of those sales came from the private collection of Scottsdale resident Sid Stern, who auctioned off more than 800 sports memorabilia items, many obtained during his time as a pharmacist for Chicago sports teams.

A shadowbox with photos and the glove signed by Cobb, Mel Ott and Tris Speaker sold for under the $5,000 minimum-value estimated by auction house owner Josh Levine.

Other items sold for more than their estimated value. Among them:

— A signed and framed Roberto Clemente photograph purchased for $1,200. It was estimated to sell for $100-$300.

— A certified Joe Montana autographed San Francisco 49rs football helmet that sold for $960. Its estimated value was between $400-$800.

— A Brooklyn Dodgers baseball sold for $2,160 was signed by Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, Gil Hodges, Pee Wee Reese, Don Newcombe and others. The estimated value was $800-$1,200.

Other items auctioned from Stern's collection:

— A 1992 Chicago Bulls basketball signed by Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, B.J. Armstrong, Horace Grant, John Paxson, and Will Perdue that sold for $840.

— A 1966 Chicago Bears football signed by Hall of Famers Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers that sold for $660.

— Heavyweight champion boxing trunks signed by Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Ken Norton, George Foreman and Larry Holmes that sold for $3,300.
