The Central Council for Indian Medicine (CCIM) may not accord permission to Taranath Government Ayurveda College to admit students for the first year Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) and post-graduates in ‘Rasashastra’ for the academic year 2015-16.

Shortage of teaching staff is said to be the main reason behind such decision. The intake of the college for first year BAMS is 40 under-graduates and seven post-graduates students.

A team from CCIM visited the college recently and found that around 50 per cent of the teaching staff posts were vacant. Of the total 32 posts of teaching staff only 18 were filled – seven professors, two assistant professors, nine lecturers and one Guest lecturer to teach Sanskrit.

The other infrastructure facilities, including building, hospital building, library, labs, were up to the mark.

When contacted, Dr. G.R. Vastrad college principal told The Hindu that the matter had been taken up with the Director of Ayurveda, Yoga, Siddha, Unani and Homeopathy (AYUSH) to initiate steps to fill-up the vacant posts on priority to get back the permission to admit students for the first year during the academic year 2015-16.

He also informed that the CCIM would be calling for a hearing to ascertain whether steps have been initiated to overcome the deficiencies pointed out before taking a final decision in the matter.

Delay in framing the rules for providing reservations for candidates of Hyderabad-Karnatak area under Article 371(J) came in the way of filling up the posts. Enquiries revealed that the State government was expected to issue notification to fill posts of lecturers and if done expeditiously, the college could overcome the problem of shortage of staff.

Reputed college hospital

The college hospital, established in 1947 and taken over by the government in 1976, is a reputed one for its best treatment and patients from in and around Ballari and also from other districts thronging it.

The college has recorded cent percent results with all the 34 final year students passing in first class and one with distinction.
