‘Devar Dasimayya Jayanti Utsav’ celebrated

Colourful cultural procession and revellery marked the celebrations of ‘Devar Dasimayya Jayanti Utsav’, which was organised by the Belagavi City Corporation in cooperation with the Lingayat organisations in the city on Wednesday.

A grand cultural procession was taken out through the main roads of the city. Various traditional parties and cultural troupes participated with great enthusiasm. Deputy Commissioner N. Jayaram, Sambhaji L. Patil, MLA, leader of the Opposition in the Belagavi City Corporation Council Ramesh Sontakki and officials of the BCC and Belagavi Urban Development Authority also participated in the procession.

Later, a function was held at Shree Mallikarjun temple where the speakers reminded of how the 11th century Kannada poet and early propagator of the Veerashaiva philosophy and faith before the 12th century reformer Basaveshwar and his other contemporaries. Speakers said Dasimayya was a weaver by profession and preached non-violence and vegetarianism.
