The Deshabhaktha Karnad Sadashiva Rao Memorial Trust has completed 50 years of existence and the occasion will be marked on Tuesday with distribution of scholarships and financial assistance to associations.
Its president Pramoda Shetty told presspersons that the trust has been giving assistance to widows, senior citizens, schools, financially disadvantaged, and those suffering from diseases, among others.
It has been giving pension to 22 persons. The trust’s office said that this year the total amount of assistance or scholarships to students would be Rs. 5 lakh. It was Rs. 4 lakh last year and Rs. 9 lakh the previous year.
Shantharam Shetty, Pro-chancellor of Nitte University, will inaugurate the golden jubilee of the trust and distribute the scholarships.
The trust was started by the former MP and Mr. Pramoda Shetty’s father K.K. Shetty in 1964. Mr. Shetty, a Gandhian, was a close associate of Sadashiva Rao and had made it his mission to spread the vision of late Rao, who was known as South India’s Gandhi. Ms. Pramoda Shetty said Sadashiva. Rao, who was rich, had given everything in his possession for the poor, and believed in the principle of “little for self, the rest for others”.
