Quest Expedition Limited, promoting adventure water sports and kayaking, has launched a 150-km kayaking expedition from Kunthukal in Rameswaram island to Tuticorin to create awareness of the need for keeping the coastline clean and environment-friendly.

Collector K. Nanthakumar flagged off the six-day expedition at Kunthukal on Tuesday in the presence of Superintendent of Police N.M. Mylvahanan and Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Mandapam Station Commander H.H. More as the five-member team, led by Jehan Driver, Managing Director of Quest Expedition, set sail.

“The main objective of the expedition is to educate the fishermen to keep the coastline clean and litter-free, and encourage them to take part in water sports activities,” Mr. Driver said. The expedition was jointly organised by Tuticorin-based Aqua Outback, he added.

Mr. Driver, who had taken part in many national and international kayaking expeditions, is kayaking with John Suganth from Thangachimadam, Arjun Motha from Tuticorin, Rizwan from Mumbai and Charmaine from Goa in the present expedition launched with logistic support provided by the ICG and the district administration.

“People come close to us when we undertake a journey and it is easy to interact with them,” Mr. Driver said, adding the expedition was also aimed at motivating the local people to take part in water sports.

After completing the expedition, Quest Expedition would organise water sports at the end of April with the support of the district administration to make local fishermen take up water sports and identify their talents.
