A Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) jawan was stabbed to death allegedly by a rag picker in New Delhi’s Connaught Place area on Monday, after he allegedly refused to buy a bottle of alcohol for the rag picker. The incident was reported from Shaheed Bhagat Singh Marg near Gole Market and CCTV footage accessed from the area helped police arrest the accused.

According to police, the SSB jawan, Selvaraj (27), belonged to Kattuvalavil in Kerala and he was posted in Jammu. Police said Selvaraj was on his way to Old Delhi railway station from New Delhi railway station to catch a train to Kerala when the incident happened.

According to police, Selvaraj took an auto-rickshaw from New Delhi station and stopped on the way to buy some alcohol. Police said he gave money to the driver, Ram Chand, to fetch the liquor. “Ram Chand parked the vehicle and went to the liquor store. Just then, a rag picker, identified as Sikander (35), approached Selvaraj and asked Selvaraj to buy him a bottle of beer. Selvaraj refused and shooed him away,” an officer said.

Police said an argument broke out between the two when Sikander refused to leave. “Sikander got angry, he picked up an ice pick lying nearby and stabbed Selvaraj on his chest,” the officer said.

Sikander fled the spot leaving Selvaraj bleeding on the road. When Ram Chand returned, he saw Selvaraj lying wounded and rushed him to a hospital. However, Selvaraj was declared dead on arrival, police said.

“Making use of the CCTV footage accessed from the liquor shop camera, we identified the accused. Sikander was spotted wandering around the shop and the footage was circulated to all personnel in Connaught Place. Sikander was arrested from Barakhamba Road later in the day. A case of murder has been registered against him and the investigation is on,” DCP (New Delhi) Vijay Singh said.

Rajeev Dewan, owner of the liquor shop, said, “We are cooperating with police. We have handed over the CCTV footage to them.”
