BENGALURU: Did you know that down South the first-known cricket club was founded in Srirangapatna in 1799? If you are a cricket aficionado and are hungry for more such nuggets of information, an exhibition of rare cricket stamps organized by the Karnataka Postal Circle will surely give you the kicks.
Organized in co-ordination with the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd, the event will take you through several such milestones, offering glimpses of cricketers and their epochal achievements.
For a nation that breathes cricket, the event is rightly timed, with the Men in Blue battling it out to retain the Cup Down Under. Stamps on Sachin Tendulkar, several first-day covers on cricketing greats like Pankaj Roy, Polly Umrigar, Vijay Hazare, 2015 World Cup covers released in India and New Zealand, information about cricketing gears – it’s more like a treat on offer.
The exhibition has rare stamps and photographs capturing the illustrious journey OF Sachin Tendulkar, the Master Blaster. Also, look out for catalogues with miniature sheets on the legendary Don Bradman and a special cover with gold and silver coin with the words ‘Australian Legend’ printed on it. On display are stamps of K S Ranjitsinhji (1872-1933) considered the king of the gentleman’s game.
There are also stamps on Allan Border, Clive Lloyd, Malcom Marshall, Sunil Gavaskar and Geoffrey Boycott, among others. The stamps, postal covers and photos have been collected by M P Ramakrishna, Jagannath Mani, Prakash Chandra, A Sumithra, M R Prabhakara, Kailashchand Nahar and Pradip Jain. Nahar, who has put up his collection of stamps and photographs of Tendulkar, said, “It’s highly informative. Many visitors may not be aware of such interesting details about the game and its players.’’ Added M R Prabhakara, a cricket stamp collector, “The exhibition will create awareness about the game, the players, their records. When a young cricketer sees these, he’ll be inspired to excel in the game. The stamps are records registered in history.’’
