In Bawana, where hailstorm destroyed crops, Congress looks to reap dividend

The Delhi Congress’s attempts to strengthen its position in the rural Assembly segments of outer Delhi have its roots in the BJP’s loss of popularity

ajay maken, congress, delhi politics, bjp Ajay Maken, along with AICC Delhi in-charge visited villages Bajitpur, Katewra and Qutabgarh on Tuesday.

Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken met farmers in villages in Bawana Assembly segment, where crops had been destroyed in a recent hailstorm. With the party taking up the issue of land acquisition on a nationwide scale, the Congress’s Delhi unit is looking to utilise the platform to improve its reach in the capital.

Maken, along with AICC Delhi in-charge visited villages Bajitpur, Katewra and Qutabgarh on Tuesday. According to the Congress, no aid has been offered to farmers either by the AAP government or the BJP-led Union government. “The saddening part is that nobody from the Centre or the Delhi government bothered to visit these villages to assess the plight of farmers. The government should immediately announce compensation for these farmers for the losses they suffered,” Maken said. He was quick to point out that in 1998, the then Congress government had offered compensation to farmers after a hailstorm destroyed crops in Narela.

The Delhi Congress’s attempts to strengthen its position in the rural Assembly segments of outer Delhi have its roots in the BJP’s loss of popularity in the recent elections. Until the 2015 elections, the 14 rural seats of Delhi were BJP strongholds. But the AAP demolished the trend by winning all rural seats. The Congress finished a distant third in most places.

“We will be carrying out a series of campaigns in the villages of this area. Neither the BJP nor the AAP cared about the needs of the people here. It has always been a matter of rhetoric,” Naresh Kumar, who had contested from Mundka in 2013, said.

But senior leaders admitted that this was an issue that the Congress had first taken up but failed to convert into votes. “Whether it was Rahul Gandhi’s protest at Bhatta Parsaul or the Land Acquisition Bill, we did all we could for the farmers. But during elections, we failed to convince farmers in Delhi of this,” a senior leader said.
