Gurgaon’s health conscious residents got another chance to mix fitness and fun this weekend at the obstacle run festival, Battlefield Gurgaon, which was held in Manesar.
It was the perfect Sunday outing for those who like to have some thrill and adventure instead of spending the day on the couch. About 500 people from Gurgaon and Delhi turned up at Manesar’s Sector 9 to participate in Battlefield Gurgaon, an obstacle run festival.
Designed to amalgamate fun and fitness, 20 obstacles were placed across a stretch of five kilometers. Participants came in waves throughout the day, with one wave consisting of 30-50 participants. The obstacles included lifting weights, jumping from a height into a pit of water, climbing up ropes, crawling under barbed wire and many other tasks that tested the strength and endurance of the participants. The participants ended the race by climbing a 15 ft net wall at the finish line.
At the finish line the participants had to take their own medals, which were dangling 20ft above the ground. Naman Gupta, an architecture student, said, “I have participated in a lot of adventure sports and but this event is unique as it gives you a sense of thrill and fun in the city itself.” Robert from Netherlands, who came with his friend Dennis from Denmark, said, “I hope such events are organised on a monthly basis.”
Like Anjana, a social worker who brought her 11-year-old daughter Shivi, many parents got their kids to participate in the mini version of the race, which had 12 obstacles laid out across a one kilometer stretch. There were also those who came just to cheer their friends and family members.
Traffic Jam, a rock band, also performed at the event, singing songs like Sadda Haq, Bulla Ki Jaana, Rock On, It’s My Life and Brick On The Wall. With camel rides, zorbing ball, and mechanical bull games also available, the visitors had much to enjoy apart from the obstacle race.
Rish Saini, who founded the organizing company, Desi Warrior, said “It’s about taking part in something bigger than yourself, overcoming your fears, pushing your limits and having fun while doing it. Every person walking off this course leaves a stronger person, both physically and mentally.” They also plan to roll out nine similar events across seven cities this year.
