The Government Railway Police (GRP) in association with International Rotary Club conducted a self-defence programme lasting a week for women commuters along with the Nirbhaya Squad of policewomen who tackle molestation cases on the suburban rail network.
“We decided to start a ‘self defence’ training on the platforms for the women commuters after realising that the feedback from the team of Nirbhaya was that women commuters need to know the basic principles of protecting themselves if an untoward situation if it arises. The programme was conducted for a week on all the three lines, Central, Western and Harbour. The women commuters who participated were given a band identifying them as having undergone the ‘Nirbhaya’ training in self defence,” said GRP Commissioner Dr Ravinder Singal.

The programme was conducted at 12 railway stations selected by the Nirbhaya team members based on their experiences of which were the more crowded stations or where women were more prone to molestation.
The team members of the Nirbhaya squad are on the field for more than 20 hours.
“It was tailor made programme module designed by me especially for the women commuters. It is the confidence and her inner self that she needs to handle any crime against her to handle,” said Anjusha Chaughule, the trainer and a social activist.
