“By providing content on Sharecare, the Foundation will reach millions of consumers with helpful information on mitochondrial disease and current research,” said Laura Stanley, Executive Director for the Foundation for Mitochondrial Medicine. “Sharecare allows users and experts to connect to health information in a meaningful way, and the Sharecare content channel will enhance our efforts to raise awareness for mitochondrial disease.”

Mitochondrial disease affects about 1 in 2,500 people. The disease occurs when the body’s mitochondria, or “power plants of the body,” don’t function correctly. Keeping with the power plant analogy, a person with mitochondrial disease can experience a loss of power or energy resulting in energy flickers, brown outs, or even fatal black outs. It strikes every age, race and gender. It affects every body system, especially those that require lots of energy to work such as the neurological or muscular systems.

Mitochondrial disease is also connected to other well-known diseases, including Alzheimer's, autism, Parkinson's, Chronic Fatigue, Epilepsy and other devastating diseases that impact many more people. Understanding mitochondrial disease can provide insight into many health problems. Doctors and researchers are beginning to work together in a multi-disciplinary fashion to understand mitochondrial dysfunction as a source for treatments and a part of the cures.
