Louis Letterier Set To Direct Sony Shark Movie In The Deep

If there’s one great movie monster that never seems to go away, it’s that very real undersea predator the shark. While no shark movie has ever come close to dethroning Spielberg’s legendary ‘Jaws’ (least of all that film’s three sequels), that hasn’t stopped the likes of ‘Deep Blue Sea,’ ‘Shark Night,’ and of course the ‘Sharknado’ movies from giving it a shot.

Now, Sony are aiming to scare us off going back into the water with ‘In The Deep,’ a new shark thriller which director Louis Letterier is in talks to direct.

Deadline reports that Anthony Jaswinski’s original screenplay ‘In The Deep’ was named one of the best unproduced scripts of 2014 in the annual ‘Black List.’ Described as a cross between ‘Jaws,’ ‘127 Hours’ and ‘Gravity,’ it centres on a young woman mourning the death of her mother, who comes under attack from a great white shark whilst surfing.

Stranded on reef 20 yards out, she must find a way back to shore. Deadline call it “an emotional piece for a young twentysomething star.”

Sounds more than a little reminiscent of 2003 horror ‘Open Water’ or 2010′s ‘The Reef’ to us -  but Matti Lesham of Weimaraner Republic Pictures, who will produce ‘In The Deep’ alongside Lynn Harris, promises something special from Letterier:

“Louis’ take knocked us out and our intention is to elevate this above the genre, making [the film] terrifying but psychologically deep. It has the makings of [an] incredible survival story, but it also goes to the very core of fear on every level. It is a really frightening movie.”

In some ways this seems a departure for the French director, but then he’s been fairly unpredictable his whole career.

Letterier’s interestingly varied CV includes the first two ‘Transporter’ movies, early Marvel Studios movie ‘The Incredible Hulk,’ fantasy remake ‘Clash of the Titans,’ crime thriller ‘Now You See Me’ and upcoming Sacha Baron Cohen spy spoof ‘Grimsby.’

No potential casting or release dates for ‘In The Deep’ have been announced yet.
