22-Month-Old Pennsylvania Boy Regains Consciousness after receiving CPR for 101 Minutes

A team of 30 doctors and nurses successfully resuscitated a 22-month-old Pennsylvania boy who slipped onto a fast-moving stream and was swept away with the current.

Gardell Martin was pulled out from an icy creek was revived after an hour and 41 minutes (101 minutes) of CPR, said doctors.

Gardell came back home on March 15 and his doctors said that he has made a complete recovery.

Dr. Frank Maffei, director of the pediatric intensive care unit at Geisinger's Janet Weis Children's Hospital in Danville, said, “It's not only extraordinarily rare that we got the kid back, but what's even more extraordinary is the rate at which he recovered and the completeness of his recovery”.

As per sources, Gardell and two of his brothers were playing outside on March 11 when he accidently fell into the stream that runs through their 5-acre property near Mifflinburg.

The seven-year-old brother, Greg, ran into the house and told that he couldn’t find Gardell. Soon their mother, Rose Martin and her two teenage daughters started looking for the chid.

A neighbor found Gardell a quarter-mile away. He was caught in a tree branch and water was gushing around him, he said. Rose called 011 and the ambulance crew arrived in no time. The crew found no pulse and began CPR.

Gardell's body temperature was 77 degrees when he arrived, which was more than 20 degrees below normal, said doctors.

Dr. Maffie said in this case Gardell’s profound hypothermia worked to his advantage, as it slowed down his metabolism that gave his organs protection from cardiac arrest.

Gardell regained consciousness few hours later, and his brain function was normal. Rose Martin said it was an act of God, and there is no doubt that it was a miracle. God had the right people in the right place at the right time and they all did a wonderful job, she added.
