Baig to be shifted to Nagpur

He has been convicted in German Bakery blast case

March 24, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - MUMBAI:

The Bombay High Court on Monday directed the Maharashtra government to transfer Pune German Bakery blast case convict Himayat Baig from Pune’s Yerawada jail to the Nagpur Central Prison. The court also directed the Nagpur Central Prison’s Superintendent to ensure his security so that he faced no threats or assaults inside the prison. Baig, who was awarded the death sentence for his involvement in the German Bakery terror attack, had moved the court apprehending threat to his life.

He had also written a letter to the court claiming that he was attacked in the Yerawada jail last month, and that he had received death threat from Ravi Pujari.

On Monday, while hearing the application, the High Court asked Maharashtra about its stand. Special Public Prosecutor Raja Thakare submitted there were only two prisons in the State which had security arrangements for convicts awarded the death sentence — Pune’s Yerawada Jail and the Nagpur Central Prison.

He said the authorities had no difficulty in shifting him to the Nagpur prison.
