Hyderabad: The number of deaths on the Outer Ring Road has decreased by 27 per cent in 2014 when compared to 2013. The total number of accidents also decreased by 21 per cent. The recorded accidents in 2013 were 92 and deaths were 59, where as in 2014 the total number of accidents on ORR was 73 with 43 deaths.
With an objective of bringing awareness about road safety to the ORR users, the HMDA, in association with the Cyberabad police, is organising a Traffic Safety Week from April 11 to 17. The programme is designed to help ORR users know the rules and guidelines to be followed on ORR.
Currently, 138 km is open to traffic on ORR out of the total length of 158 km. Vehicular traffic on ORR is around 30,000 per day.
The measures taken to decrease accidents on ORR are display of safety signage, patrolling services, ambulance services, tow vehicle services etc. Patrolling on five important ORR stretches have also been on since January 2014. Some of the patrolling vehicles are equipped with speed guns and breath analysers. The Cyberabad police department claims that the above measures helped in the reduction in accidents on ORR considerably in 2014.
