Police officials at the communally sensitive Vallam area of Thanjavur district counselled those using public address system to avert noise pollution and consequent inconvenience to those in the neighbourhood.

At a meeting held with representatives of various communal organisations, marriage halls, religious places of worship, political parties, Deputy Superintendent of Police Kannan advised the public address system users to keep the sound output at the minimal to help students appearing for examinations, the elderly, children, and patients in the neighbourhood.

Quoting Supreme Court guidelines of August 30, 2000, that laid down stringent conditions for granting permission to use public address systems, Mr. Kannan said the police were considerate in granting permission but that must usage must not transgress acceptable limits.

Noise pollution near the Union, State government offices, courts, hospitals, educational institutions, and where public congregate must be avoided at any cost, he said.
