The soft silk factory at Channapatna will be renovated at a cost of Rs. 10 crore, said D. Basavaraj, chairman of the KSIC. He said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had agreed to release an amount of Rs. 6 crore and the KSIC would make use of Rs. 3.24 crore derived from the sale of old machinery from the factory.

The renovated factory would start functioning in another 15 months.

Mr. Basavaraj told The Hindu that the soft silk factory would manufacture silk saris in the range of Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 8,000. State-of-the-art machinery would be procured from Japan, he added.

There is a plan to upgrade the silk factory in Mysore at a cost of Rs. 5 crore to enhance its quality and efficiency.

At present the factory is manufacturing about 75,000 saris each year, he said.
