BHOPAL: Police on Monday arrested six people belonging to a right-wing Hindu group over their alleged role in an attack on a church and a church-run school in Jabalpur on March 20, but released them on bail a few hours later.
The accused had allegedly vandalized the church, where a Bible convention was being held. At least 200 Christians from Mandla and Narsingpur districts were present at the convention.
Church authorities alleged that members of the Hindu Dharma Sena had created a ruckus, smashed flowerpots and broken furniture, alleging conversions were taking place inside the church.
“We’ve identified and arrested six people on the basis of CCTV footage,” Jabalpur superintendent of police Harinarayanchari Mishra told TOI. “More arrests would be made during further investigations.”
The arrested were identified as Hindu Dharam Sena functionary Yogesh Agrawal and his associates Nitin Rajak, Prateek Pyasi, Anurag Chouksey, Abhishek Chouksey and Sharad Rao. They were charged under IPC sections dealing with rioting, unlawful assembly, criminal intimidation, voluntarily causing hurt, trespassing, etc. They were later granted bail on personal bonds of Rs 25,000 each.
The Christian community in Madhya Pradesh condemned the granting of bail in the case. “We’re surprised by police investigations,” said Marco Baba, general secretary of Isai Mahasangh. “The accused were charged with bailable offences and released.” The Bible convention at Saint Aloysius Church had concluded amid heavy security on Sunday, he said.
