BJP names ex-BSP MP’s son for Charkhari bypolls

Akhil will be filing his nomination papers on Tuesday in the presence of BJP state president Laxmikant Bajpai.

A month after former BSP MP Ganga Charan Rajput joined BJP, the saffron party has given ticket to his son Akhil Rajput for Charkhari assembly by-elections on April 11. Akhil will be filing his nomination papers on Tuesday in the presence of BJP state president Laxmikant Bajpai.

According to sources, Ganga Charan had demanded ticket for his elder son Brijbhushan but party denied the request citing criminal cases reportedly pending against him.

BJP has also decided to repeat Bajrang Bahadur Singh on Pharenda seat. Bajrang Bahadur was elected MLA from the same seat in 2012, but the Election Commission had disqualified him on the charges of violating the Representation of the People Act. He was held guilty by the UP Lokayukta for taking government contracts even after being elected as public representative.

Ganga Charan had created a flutter when he pulled out a revolver in front of Sonia Gandhi’s residence in Delhi in 2004 threatening to shoot himself. He was requesting Sonia to become the Prime Minister. He was elected to Lok Sabha from Hamirpur on BJP ticket in 1996 and 1998, but joined Congress later and lost Lok Sabha election from the same seat in 2004. In 2009, he contested as BSP nominee against BJP’s Varun Gandhi in Pilibhit but lost. BSP later sent him to Rajya Sabha.

According to the EC, the Allahabad High Court had stayed the April 11 by-election on Pharenda Assembly seat on March 20 on writ petition filed by Bajrang Bahadur Singh. The EC had then filed an SLP before the Supreme Court challenging the High Court’s order. On the said SLP, the Supreme Court Monday stayed the High Court’s order.

Festive offer

By-election on Charkhari seat was announced after a local court of Jalaun in January sentenced SP MLA Kaptan Singh Rajput and his elder brother Laxman Singh to life imprisonment in a case related to a murder inside in police custody in 2002. Kaptan Singh was elected MLA from Charkhari constituency in Mahoba in a bypoll in September last year.
