Will request panel to raise Haj quota for Delhi: Manish Sisodia

The pilgrims’ list is available on the website of the Haj committee.

The Delhi government on Monday said it would request the Haj committee to increase the quota of pilgrims from Delhi.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said this while launching the website of the Delhi Haj Committee. “The quota of Delhi for Haj this year was 1,163 and we have received 8,875 applications. The flights for Haj will begin from August 17 and the government will organise camps for vaccination and medical check-up of pilgrims,” he said, while requesting the chairman of the Haj Committee of India, Qaisar Shamim, to increase the Haj quota for Delhi.

Shamim said efforts are on to increase India’s Haj quota and, for this, the Ministry of External Affairs is in touch with the Saudi Arabia government. “Informally, the Saudi government had accepted India’s request to increase the quota and the number of pilgrims is likely to be more next year,” he said.

The draw of lots for Haj applicants was held at a simple ceremony. The pilgrims’ list is available on the website of the Haj committee.

Based on the population recorded by the 2001 Census, India was allotted a quota of 1.2 lakh Haj pilgirms by the Saudi government. But, every year, the government receives close to 3.83-lakh applications on an average and only one of every four applicants is selected for the pilgrimage, the Haj committee chairman said.
