SMC to create database of 1 lakh skilled workers
SURAT: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) is working to build a database of one lakh skilled workers such as masons, carpenters, painters, gardeners and plumbers at a cost of Rs 1 crore. The civic body plans to upload it on the SMC app under services head in the next few months, which people will be able to access on their smart phones.
SMC has already floated tenders for the database project.
Any professional agency that would be awarded the project would have to employ field investigators for collection of the data. The data would be verified before its assimilation into the system, sources said.
"We will also hold 'shramik melas' to collect data of skilled workers in the city. The workers would be segregated as per their field of specialization," SMC deputy commissioner Hemant Desai said.
The database would make it easy for the people to locate skilled workers. People can log on to their SMC app and click under the services head and contact the worker they need. SMC would also be able keep a tab on the success of its effort. The civic body would come to know whenever someone contacts a skilled worker.
SMC would list the experienced workers through the field agency and the new ones by organizing employment melas and 'shramik recruitment melas'. "This will help to generate new employment opportunities for the skilled workers and also help people get all the required services at their doorstep," Desai said.
SMC expects the database exercise to be over in three months time. A couple of months would take for its verification before being uploaded on the system.
