Demand for Dandi route bridge marches on human chain
AHMEDABAD: In 1930, when Mahatma Gandhi had embarked on the Dandi March, he stayed overnight at Kankapura village in Borsad taluka of Anand district. Now 85 years after the Salt Satyagraha, scores of villagers recently formed a human chain to demand a bridge on a spot along the historic Dandi heritage route.
Villagers are pressing for an overbridge on the Mahisagar River from where Bapu reached Kareli village of Jambusar on March 20, 1930.
On March 19, 1930, Gandhiji along with 79 followers stayed at Kankapura village where they received a warm welcome. The next day, they started their yatra for Kareli on a boat.
During their campaign, the villagers lit 85 lamps on the memorial stage where Mahatma Gandhi delivered a speech. Karan Garasiya, a resident of Kankapura, said, “When we made a human chain on Friday last, around 200 prominent people from Kankapura and nearby villages joined the action.” He said that constructing a bridge between Kankapura and Kareli villages would not only help foreign visitors but also connect the villages on the bank of the Mahisagar.
