On women’s health

Mother Teresa Women’s University, Madurai centre, celebrated the International Women’s Day on March 10 with a lecture on ‘Women’s health’ by L. Santhanalakshmi, Director, Institute of Physiology, Madurai Medical College. M. Pushpa Rani, Co-ordinator of Madurai centre, welcomed the gathering. Students screened their documentary, ‘Towards a successful woman,’ on the occasion. They also presented a cultural programme. A human chain was formed by students on March 11, in continuation of the Women’s Day celebrations.

Saying ‘no’ to plastic

In an effort to create a ‘plastic-free campus,’ National Service Scheme volunteers of E.M.G. Yadava Women’s College, Madurai, collected plastic waste in and around the campus, in the presence of the Principal R. Poovazhaki, and self-finance director Pushpalatha. The collected plastic waste was handed over to Swadeshi, a self-help group, functioning at Naganakulam, for use in laying plastic roads. An oath was administered to the students to cut down plastic usage. Plastic bags have been banned on the college campus and the college canteen will use only paper bags prepared by the NSS Volunteers.

Rally by students

The Women’s Cell of St. Justin’s College of Education, Madurai, celebrated International Women’s Day with a range of activities, including a talk by the chief guest, Rev. Fr. Lourdusamy, secretary, St. Xavier’s College of Education, Palayamkottai. Students presented several events focussing on issues concerning women. The Principal, Rev. Sr. A. Mary Delphine, presided. The staff and students took out an awareness rally from the college through New Ramnad Road, Teppakulam and Kamarajar Salai.

Sports meet

Madurai Sivakasi Nadars Pioneer Meenakshi Women’s College, Poovanthi, conducted its 16th annual sports meet on February 28. K. Muthukumar, Assistant Commissioner of Police, delivered the address. The meet began with march past, flag hoisting and lighting of the Olympic torch. J. Ashok, assistant secretary, welcomed the gathering. Thenmozhi, Physical Directress, presented the annual report. Students presented a karate and silambam demonstration on the occasion. Blue House won the overall championship. Poun Rose proposed a vote of thanks.

Awareness seminar

The Women Empowerment Forum of Saraswathi Narayanan College, Madurai, organised an awareness seminar to mark the International Women’s Day. J. Charukesi, Post Master General, Southern Region, the chief guest, in her address, insisted that women should develop passion for their chosen field. She also distributed certificates and prizes to winners of various competitions. M. Kannan, Principal, presided. P. Veerammal, Coordinator of the forum, welcomed the participants. K. Krishnan, Vice-Principal, and K. Jeyakodi, Dean, offered felicitations. Premalatha proposed a vote of thanks.

“Be ambitious”

Department of Humanities and Science of Sethu Institute of Technology, Kariapatti, organised a talk on the topic, ‘Boys and girls, be ambitious,’ by C. Sylendra Babu, Additional Director General of Police. In his address, Dr. Babu emphasised the importance of listening skill to come up in life and highlighted the need for planning. He advised the students to improve their communication skill in English and develop expertise in another foreign language. He wanted them to keep up the habit of reading and develop a better attitude towards work. The founder and chairman, S. Mohamed Jaleel, presided over the function. Principal A. Senthilkumar welcomed the gathering and Dean P.G. Jansirani proposed a vote of thanks.

On empowerment

International Women’s Day was celebrated at Pandian Saraswathi Yadav Engineering College, Arasanoor, on March 6. M. Ramasamy, former Head, Department of Dramatics, Tamil University, in his special address, highlighted the merits of women’s empowerment in the modern context. He highlighted how women had proved that they were equal to men at all levels. College chairman S. Pandian and Saraswathi Pandian presided over the celebration. Principal V. Dharmalingam welcomed the gathering. Managing Director S.P. Varadharajan offered felicitations. Sannila Begam proposed a vote of thanks.

Exhibition

Visakan School - CBSE, Madurai, celebrated the Founder’s Day with a science and art exhibition on March 2. Sanjay Kumar of Thiagarajar College of Engineering delivered the Founder’s Day address. The exhibition was inaugurated by Ganesan, former Regional Manager, Tamilnad Mercantile Bank. Students displayed their exhibits on various topics like farm animals, wild animals, transport, festivals, seasons, insectivorous plants, symmetry and solar and lunar eclipses.
