Kulwant Singh declared IMA Ludhiana president-elect

Elections for the post of president-elect for 2016, and two posts of vice-presidents 2015 of Indian Medical Association (IMA) Ludhiana were conducted smoothly at the IMA House in the city on Sunday.

LUDHIANA: Elections for the post of president-elect for 2016, and two posts of vice-presidents 2015 of Indian Medical Association (IMA) Ludhiana were conducted smoothly at the IMA House in the city on Sunday. The total number of votes polled were 503. Dr Kulwant Singh was declared elected as president-elect for 2016, receiving 274 votes as against Dr Narjit Kaur, who bagged 217 votes.
Dr Avinash Jindal and Dr Deepak Parasher were declared elected vice-presidents for 2015. They received 355 and 289 votes respectively. Dr PS Kohli was the third candidate who got 239 votes. The election commission, comprising Dr Jasbir Singh Chugh, Dr Pritpal Singh, and Dr Anil Vohra conducted the election process, and the observers from State IMA Punjab - Dr Rakesh Vig, Dr Jagatjeet Singh Virk, and Dr Yogeshwar Sood - were present for smooth and fair elections.
The election commission of IMA Ludhiana thanked the members for voting in such large numbers, as 503 votes were polled out of 592 eligible voters. No untoward incident was reported during the elections, said Dr Virk. Dr Ajit Singh Chawla will serve as president in the year 2015, and then the office will be taken over by Dr Kulwant Singh in 2016. It is to be noted that 45 members cast their votes on Friday - two days before the election date - as they were not available to vote on Sunday.
The agenda of the winning team of Dr Kulwant Singh is: (i) Solving issues of nursing homes, like parking and nursing homes in residential areas. (ii) Implementing the high court order of not arresting any doctor without a report of the expert committee. (iii) Conducting regular CME (Continuing Medical Education) programmes. (iv) Making area-wise committees to combat violence against hospitals. (v) Implementing the Violence Against Doctors and Nursing Homes Act, as passed in the assembly. (vi) Changing the constitution which bars many members from voting. (vii) Including one member each of the IMA in the medical board and the PNDT (Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques) Committee. (viii) Associating with other doctor bodies. (ix) Organizing two big events every month. (x) Engaging a permanent lawyer for IMA doctors. (xi) Introducing a patient grievance cell. (xii) Including more doctors and nursing homes in the security services. (xiii) Instituting an ethical committee for problems related to doctors. (xiv) and starting an IMA club from 5-8pm every day.
