Lipitor Diabetes Allegations

Lipitor is a statin medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat patients with high cholesterol. The drug's safety was called into question in February 2012, however, when the federal agency ordered all manufacturers of statin medications to adjust labeling on their products to reflect their possible association with new-onset Type 2 diabetes. This was a month after research in JAMA: Internal Medicine published findings that the disease may be more likely to develop in post-menopausal women taking Lipitor.*

The link between this medication and Type 2 diabetes has been alleged in Lipitor diabetes lawsuits now pending in the District of South Carolina, court documents indicate. Among other things, plaintiffs in these cases allege that Pfizer Inc. failed to adequately relay this association to consumers, even after officials adjusted its labeling in February 2012.
