A few social organisations on Wednesday urged the Government to withdraw the criminal case filed against Rajya Sabha MP P.Kannan.
Makkal Thalaivar Va.Subbiah Makkal Iyakkam pointed out that on the night of March 13 the Puducherry Municipal Administration removed name-boards kept on Chinna Subbaraya Pillai Street and Bussy Street without any prior notice.
On hearing this, Mr. Kannan came to the spot and asked the officials whether they could remove the name-boards without any prior intimation.
The Municipal Commissioner went away from the spot without answering the Rajya Sabha MP. His action had provoked Mr. Kannan’s supporters to turn against the officials.
Canals not de-silted
The social organisation’s general secretary B.Anand charged that the Puducherry Municipality does not remove the garbage from the street and de-silt the drainage canals properly.
Rather than concentrating on such issues, the action of the municipal administration in removing name-boards in midnight and harassing small traders is condemnable.
Justifying the intervention of political parties and social organisations in public issues, he said the government should intervene and withdraw the case foisted on Mr.Kannan and his supporters.
Proper consultation
The Puducherry Municipal administration should consult political and social organisations before taking any action.
People’s Living Right Movement president G.A.Jaagannathan also urged the Government to withdraw the cases. The cases were registered in haste against Mr.Kannan and his supporters without realising the excellence of democracy.
