Culvert widening work to start soon

March 22, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

It is a perennial problem. In summer, trash and drainage overflow onto the roads from drains, and in rainy season, rain water from hill slopes reaches roads, as the existing culverts are too narrow.

This has been the case at Nyzam Gate in Wynchipeta and Zero Bulbline in Old Rajarajeswaripeta for the past several years.

Lack of a sound drainage system is causing severe inconvenience to residents of Wynchipeta, Gandhi Bomma centre, Abotu Appana Pakalaveedhi and old Rajarajeswaripeta.

Drainage water from drains at Nyzam Gate and Zero Bulbline flows under the railway tracks towards Budameru.

Since the drains were laid decades ago, and with the population rising, residents have been demanding that the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) improve the existing infrastructure. It was conveyed to VMC Commissioner G. Veerapandian during his inspection of these localities recently.

To widen the existing culverts and mitigate the problem, the VMC authorities have proposed box culverts to replace the decades-old masonry culverts.

Deposit sought

Accordingly, the railway authorities have demanded a deposit of Rs. 10.30 crore, as the culverts have to be constructed beneath the tracks, said Vijayawada West MLA Jaleel Khan.

Rs. 47 crore

sanctioned

Following several representations, the government sanctioned Rs. 47 crore towards the construction of major outfall drains, culverts across railway tracks, including Nyzam Gate and Zero Bulbline gate.

Works are likely to commence in June, Mr. Khan claimed.
