Anbumani asks Uma Bharti to stop dam work

March 22, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - CHENNAI:

Urging Union Minister for Water Resources Uma Bharti to take immediate steps to stop the Karnataka government from going ahead with its plans to construct a dam at Mekedatu across the Cauvery, PMK MP Anubmuni Ramadoss also requested her to constitute the Cauvery Management Board and hand over all matters relating to the river.

Dr. Anbumnai, who met Ms. Bharti, brought to her notice the objections raised by the Chief Conservator of Forests of Karnataka on the ground that the project would jeopardise wildlife. The new dam would deprive Tamil Nadu of water and lead to law and problems in the State. “This will make the Cauvery basin a desert,” he said. Dr. Anbumani said that Tamil Nadu had already filed a petition against the dam construction in the Supreme Court and any construction of irrigation structures without permission was illegal.

“Karnataka’s new dam, if built, will deprive Tamil Nadu of water and lead to law and order problems”
