Prisoner returns jail on his own, policemen detained near red light area in West Bengal

Baij Yadav, who is on trial for petty offences, was being taken from Ranchi's Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences.

Koderma district police have suspended four personnel after they were found in the red light area of West Bengal’s Asansol at odd hours even as the prisoner whom they were supposed to be transporting returned to the jail on his own.

Superintendent of Police Y.S. Ramesh has said that he suspended three constables and a havildar. “They were detained by the Asansol police even as they were supposed to be escorting a prisoner,” he said. The undertrial returned on his own to Koderma jail on Friday.

“We detained the four men, who were in civil dress, because they were found in a part of the red light area. This happened in the wee hours of Friday,” said P.K. Dwivedi, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), Asansol.

A senior police officer said that the four suspended men have said in their defence that they were drugged by Yadav:

Festive offer

“They claim that after they stopped for a meal at Hazaribagh, the prisoner mixed something in their beverage. When they came to their senses, they were in a vehicle that had crossed from Dhanbad into Asansol.”  SP Ramesh will continue to investigate the matter.
