Google is celebrating Navroz or Nowruz, the Iranian New year, by doodling colourful flowers and plants in its Google search logo. The word Navroz means "New Day" which marks the first day in the Iranian calendar.

The festival is celebrated by people ranging from different communities across the globe. The festival is secular in nature but is considered as a holy day for the Zoroastrians.

The festival usually occurs on March 21 but according to the traditions this is the day when day and night are nearly equal. The day marks the astronomical Northward Equinox, when the sun just crosses the celestial equator.

In India, Parsis, Kashmiris and Shia Muslims celebrate the festival and enjoy a short vacation in the name of the festival. Navroz, as the name suggests, celebrates the change in nature which is the advent of spring and is celebrated after a week-long preparations.
